Same thing for an airplane themed room. You don't need to use all kinds of airplanes hanging from the ceiling in order to get the theme across. A ceiling fan shaped as an airplane propeller in the room paired with some denim bedding and maybe a shelf of model airplanes will keep it from being too over the top.
When a room does go over the top, the child will get tired of it much quicker than otherwise. A light fixture is one of those easy things to change out every 4-6 years when you redecorate. If you are not up for that, you can keep it simple and use a traditional flat ceiling light in your child's bedroom. Instead of using a light fixture for a focal point, you can use the bedding or even your child's artwork instead...
